#MedFoodHeroes 2020

A big part of the Rooted Everyday campaign for 2020 will be focused on Mediterranean Food Heroes from our ecosites. They’re people who produce, shop and cook sustainably from across the Mediterranean. It’s an opportunity to talk about culture and biodiversity whilst showcasing the quality ingredients the Med has to offer. We want to show the rest of the world how the food we choose to put on our plates impacts both the environment and the sustainable economy.

We’ll be building up our stories, recipes and food facts during the first half of 2020 and launching our #MedFoodHeroes campaign fortnight from 15-27 June 2020 and we’d love you to take part.

Three Ways You Can Support #MedFoodHeroes

1. Shop responsibly and support small producers who follow traditional and sustainable ways of farming, stockbreeding and fishing and tell your friends on social media about how they can do the same.

2. Host a Share A Dish night 25-27 June 2020 with your colleagues, friends and family and invite us to join the party by posting your recipes and food photos @RootedEveryday using the hashtag #MedFoodHeroes.

3. Send us a recipe using some of the ingredients from our producers.

Sharing meals in the Mediterranean feels as good as the food tastes. A diet based on the region’s traditional fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, seafood, olive oil, and dairy can have a good effect on your mood and mental health.

Let’s appreciate eating healthy and delicious foods with friends and family as often as we can. Browse our recipes inspired by the sustainable ingredients of our Mediterranean Food Heroes.

Monoculture farming is devastating our ecosystem and leading us on a path to global extinction

Reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) revealed that the global livestock industry is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than the running of all the world’s transport combined – and it’s polluting our air, land and water. So, just how bad is the problem and what can we do about it? Mass livestock production is leading to deforestation and loss of biodiversity. We need to shift our relationship with food by choosing how often to eat it, how to produce it and where to buy it from.

If you’re looking for ways to make a difference, why not commit to being a more conscious shopper? Wherever you live you can make a difference by:

  • Eating local produce
  • Buying from small sustainable producers
  • Recycling packaging
  • Voting for people committed to environmental change

It’s Your Choice

85%
of consumers would rather choose a natural product.

#MedFoodHeroes

More people want to know where the food on their plate has come from. When you buy from a small Mediterranean farmer, stockbreeder or fisherman you’re choosing to pay a fair price for food that is labour intensive, high quality and sustainable.

Free to roam

A herd of 1000 free to roam sheep walking 1,500km can scatter up to 200 million seeds along the way.

Animals reared in the open air are fitter and more resistent to disease making them a healthier source of food. What’s more being raised in pastures requires less fossil fuel energy and reduces demand for industrial feed and pollution from transportation.

The Grass is Greener

Where generations have traditionally tended habitats which are rich in flora and fauna conservation thrives. Livestock that is free to roam gives pastures and trees a chance to regenerate and reduces pressure on water resources.

Ungrazed pasture is fuel for wildfire. Every year wildfires devastate the Mediterranean with huge costs the economy, local people and environment.

Grazing helps maintain biodiversity and reduces the impacts of climate change. Pastures offset CO2 and act as a carbon sink.
